About
This small 139-acre lake sits approximately 24 miles southwest of Grants Pass, just east of the town of Selma off Highway 199. Often called Josephine County’s only lake, Lake Selmac offers a quieter paddleboarding experience than many Southern Oregon lakes. The shallow, warm water and 10 mph speed limit make it particularly appealing for paddlers seeking calm conditions.
Water Conditions & Skill Level Beginner-friendly. The majority of the lake is under 10 feet deep, with warm water in summer. Motorboats are allowed but restricted to 10 mph maximum speed, which keeps wakes minimal and conditions calm for paddleboarders. The speed restriction and small size make this one of the more relaxed paddling spots in the region – no water skiing or jet skis creating large wake.
Access & Launch Two public boat ramps provide easy launch access. Short carry from parking to water. The lake’s small size (approximately 0.6 square miles) means you’re never far from shore, making it less intimidating for beginners.
What You’ll See Shallow, warm water surrounded by forested shoreline. Excellent fishing for trophy largemouth bass (the state record was caught here twice), bluegill, crappie, rainbow trout, and bullhead catfish. Good bird watching opportunities. Nature trails around the lake. The scenic, quiet setting makes for peaceful paddling without the crowds of larger lakes.
Best Times to Go Late spring through early fall for warmest water. Weekdays offer the quietest conditions. Late summer can see green algae in the water during particularly hot periods. Check for harmful algal bloom advisories during warmer months.
Amenities Full-service resort and campground with general store (beer, food, fishing supplies), boat rentals (fishing boats with electric motors, row boats, pedal boats), restrooms, showers. Multiple camping loops, including full-hookup sites, partial hook-ups, tent sites, and yurts. Mini-golf course, disc golf, volleyball, horseshoe pits, picnic shelters available for rent.
