About
Willow Lake
This 345-acre reservoir sits in mountain backcountry 43 miles northeast of Medford near the small town of Butte Falls. With dramatic views of 9,493-foot Mt. McLoughlin rising to the east, Willow Lake offers a more secluded paddleboarding experience than many other Southern Oregon lakes. The setting feels remote despite being only an hour’s drive from town.
Water Conditions & Skill Level Beginner to intermediate. Calm, flat water with no current. Motorboats are allowed, so expect some boat traffic and wake during busy summer weekends. Weekdays see significantly fewer boats, making conditions much calmer for paddlers. Water stays cooler than lower-elevation lakes through summer.
Access & Launch Good boat ramp access from the day-use area. Short distance from parking to water. Note that low water levels in recent years may affect ramp usability for larger boats, but paddleboards can always be carried to the water’s edge.
What You’ll See Nearly 4.5 miles of forested shoreline to explore with mountain views throughout your paddle. The lake sits at 3,014 feet elevation, surrounded by pine and fir trees. Good fishing for trout, bass, and kokanee salmon. Wildlife sightings possible along quieter stretches of shore.
Best Times to Go Mid-April through October when the campground and facilities are fully operational. Mornings offer the calmest water before any afternoon wind picks up and before motorboat activity increases. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends – some paddlers report almost no boats during the week.
Amenities Restrooms with showers, drinking water, picnic areas, swim beach, boat ramp. On-site camping with 63 campsites (hookup and non-hookup sites available), plus 4 cabins, 2 yurts, and group camping area. Good option for overnight stays. No paddleboard rentals on-site – bring your own equipment.
Fees & Notes $6 daily parking fee or $45 season pass. Open year-round for day use during daylight hours. Popular spot that fills up in summer – arrive early or reserve campsites in advance. Two-night minimum stay for camping on weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day. Check for occasional algal bloom advisories in warmer months.
