About
Emigrant Lake
This 806-acre reservoir sits in rolling hills five miles southeast of Ashland, making it the closest paddleboarding spot for Medford and Ashland locals and visitors. The lake offers calm, flat water with no current – ideal conditions for beginners getting comfortable on a board.
Water Conditions & Skill Level Beginner-friendly flatwater. Wind can pick up during the day, particularly in afternoons, creating small chop that makes paddling more challenging but manageable. Water warms considerably through summer. Mornings and late afternoons offer the calmest conditions.
Access & Launch Good launch access from the west arm of the lake near the county park area. The boat ramp is accessible depending on water levels – in drought years, water can drop low enough to limit motorboat access, though paddleboards can still be hand-carried to the water. Ample parking at the recreation area (but there is a fee).
What You’ll See Paddling reveals views of surrounding oak-covered hills. The reservoir spans 12 miles of shoreline with plenty of room to explore. Wildlife sightings possible. Note that water clarity decreases as summer progresses and temperatures rise.
Best Times to Go Late spring through mid-to-late summer when water levels are highest. The lake is managed by Talent Irrigation District for agricultural use, so levels fluctuate seasonally and vary significantly year to year depending on precipitation. Check current water levels before visiting, especially late summer.
Amenities Restrooms, drinking water, picnic areas, playground, two 280-foot water slides (Memorial Day to Labor Day), full-hookup campground. Paddleboard rentals and guided tours available on-site from local outfitters during summer season.
Fees & Notes $6 daily parking fee or $45 season pass. Dogs allowed. Lake closes at sunset except for campground area. Water quality tested bi-weekly in summer – occasional harmful algal bloom advisories possible in early summer.
