About
This 988-acre reservoir sits in the heart of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, approximately 22 miles southwest of historic Jacksonville and 28 miles from Medford. Created in 1980 when the Army Corps of Engineers completed the 242-foot Applegate Dam, the lake is surrounded by forested slopes and the often snow-covered peaks of the Siskiyou Mountains, with the Red Buttes Wilderness Area to the south. The picturesque setting offers 18.5 miles of shoreline to explore.
Water Conditions & Skill Level Beginner to intermediate. Motorboats are allowed but restricted to 10 mph maximum speed – designated as a “No Wake Lake” – which keeps conditions calm and peaceful for paddlers. Maximum depth of 225 feet. Clear blue waters remain relatively flat, making this an ideal spot for paddleboarding and kayaking without crowds. The speed restriction eliminates water skiing and jet skis, creating consistently mellow conditions.
Access & Launch Three boat ramps around the lake. Hart-Tish Park on the north side serves as the main access point with beautifully groomed lawns sloping to the water’s edge. Multiple day-use areas including Seattle Bar, Manzanita Lake Access, and Carberry Swimming Area provide additional launch points for paddlers. Some access points close late summer when water levels drop.
What You’ll See Spectacular views across the lake to the Red Buttes Wilderness peaks. The 18-mile shoreline trail offers continuous exploration opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Abundant wildlife including numerous bird species. Spring and early summer bring plentiful wildflower viewing. The reservoir inundated the old mining towns of Copper and Watkins – when water levels drop, the old highway to Copper reappears.
Best Times to Go Late spring through early fall for best water levels and weather. The reservoir is managed for flood control and irrigation, so water levels fluctuate seasonally – highest in spring, potentially lower by late summer. Check current levels before visiting, especially August through September.
Amenities Hart-Tish Park offers paddleboard and kayak rentals, general store with snacks, ice cream, fishing and camping supplies, ice, beverages. Multiple campgrounds including Hart-Tish (tent and RV sites), Jackson on the River (year-round, river access), Carberry (group site), and others. Flush toilets at some locations, vault toilets at others. Day-use areas with restrooms, picnic sites, drinking water. No showers at most locations.
Fees & Notes $7 day-use fee at some areas. Campground fees vary by location. Interagency Senior/Access/Military Pass accepted. The 10 mph speed limit maintains the lake’s rustic character and creates ideal paddling conditions without significant boat wake. Limited cell phone coverage in remote areas – plan accordingly.
